After several large wildfires in recent weeks, the Cleburne Fire Department enjoyed a relatively calm weekend.
Firefighters did respond to one small grass fire on Monday morning, however.
Firefighters responded to the 800 block of Sparks Drive at 4:33 a.m. to find an area of about one acre of grass on fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze with about 800 gallons of water.
A lightning arrestor from a power pole in the burned area appears to have been the source of the fire, according to CFD reports.
Holiday DPS arrests
Texas Highway Patrol troopers arrested 1,406 intoxicated drivers during the department’s special Fourth of July holiday enforcement program, which ran from June 27 to July 6, said Tom Vinger, Texas Department of Public Safety assistant chief of media relations.
Of those arrests, 575 were made by troopers whose patrols were funded through a special Texas Department of Transportation grant, Vinger said. Troopers concentrated on looking for intoxicated drivers in high-risk locations during times when alcohol-related crashes most often occur, he said.
“With the additional grant funding, our troopers stayed on the roads longer and made more arrests,” said David G. Baker, DPS assistant director. “I’m certain that we prevented some potentially serious crashes by putting intoxicated drivers in jail.”
Troopers will once again provide additional patrols to enhance public safety during the next special enforcement period, scheduled for the Labor Day holiday.

Officials, residents remember those who gave it all
A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
