American Legion Auxiliary accepting applications for school aid



American Legion Auxiliary is accepting applications for APPLES program, which helps needy children with school supplies.

A limited number of children will be helped.

Applications may be picked up or filled out from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays at Post 50, located at 313 W. Chambers.

Venus grad completes basic training



Army Pvt. Stewart D. Ware has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, Ware studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

He is the son of Allen Ware of Alvarado and a 2007 graduate of Venus High School.

Master Gardeners to sponsor certification class for juniors



The Johnson County Master Gardeners will sponsor its second Jr. Master Gardener certification class on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from Aug. 12 through Dec. 9 in the Joshua Community Room, located in the high school parking lot next to the Library

Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, with a 15 minute break. Parents responsible for snacks and drinks

The class is geared for children ages 7-12 to learn the fundamentals of gardening and working with the natural world. Children younger than 7 will need to attend with a parent.

As much as possible, recycled materials will be used for activities, and students will be asked to bring recycled and other items for projects.

All other materials provided.

The only fee is for the Jr. Master Gardener Handbook, which is $15.

Library chess tournament begins Thursday



Children 17 and under are invited to participate in the Cleburne Public Library’s first chess tournament, which begins Thursday.

Check in begins at 10 a.m. and play starts at 10:30 a.m.

A second tournament is scheduled for Aug. 10, with check in at 3 p.m. and play beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Tournament rules will be posted at the library.

The tournament includes three divisions: Division 1 for children 9 and younger, Division 2 for children 10-13, and Division 3 for children 14-17.

Participants must bring their own chess sets.

Although two dates are available, participants may only play in one. Entrants should plan to play one to three games during tournament play.

Winners of the initial tournaments will be invited back to compete in an invitational-only championship to be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 17.

    A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
