Obama wins straw poll at Decision ’08

With the presidential election less than a month away, the Alvarado High School debate club hosted Alvarado Decision ’08 on Monday.

Students gave pro-candidate speeches and local politicians answered questions from those in attendance.

Sophomores Austin Williams, Tyler Dixon and Mariah Fowler spoke on behalf of each presidential candidate after being introduced by sophomore Mary Dixon. Senior Amy Parker informed the audience of why their vote is important.

After hearing about each candidate, an intermission provided everyone with the opportunity to cast a vote in a mock vote. A total of 64 votes were cast with Barack Obama receiving 30 votes, John McCain came in second with 29. Bob Barr was third with four votes, and one ballot was submitted blank.

The second half of the program consisted of a question and answer session with Democrat, Libertarian and Republican Party members. Moderator was AHS librarian Susan Mauldin.

Congressman Chet Edwards and Greg Kauffman, who is running for District 58 representative, fielded questions for the Democrats. Bruce Beckman, candidate for State Board of Education District 11, and John Spivey, Tarrant County party chairman, represented the Libertarian party. Larry Hunter, campaign manager for Rob Curnock, represented the Republicans.

Questions came from the audience and included both local and national policy issues.

“It was truly amazing,” said AHS debate club sponsor Lark Johnston. “I couldn’t be prouder of our AHS debate students. I think Congressman Edwards summed up the evening best when he mentioned that ‘no one party has a monopoly on wisdom’ and talked about how refreshing it was to have a political forum where ideas could be exchanged without negativity.”
