199 recognized for academic excellence

The achievements of 199 Cleburne High School students were celebrated Monday evening at the annual Academic Excellence recognition ceremony, sponsored by St. Mark United Methodist Church.

Sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates were recognized for attaining a 4.6 cumulative GPA in the 2007-08 school year with the presentation of an academic afghan to first-time achievers. Repeat honorees received a certificate.

The ceremony took place in the high school’s Don Smith Performing Arts Center.

CHS Principal Monte Pritchett and the Rev. Danny Niedecken, minister of St. Mark United Methodist, welcomed the honorees and their parents. St. Mark UMC members began the academic recognition program more than 25 years ago.

Cleburne ISD Superintendent Dr. Ronny Beard, who attended the ceremony for the first time, congratulated the students on their accomplishments and had words of praise for their parents.

“Don’t forget to say ‘thank you’ to your mom and dad,” Beard said. “They go above and beyond to help you.”

Beard also commended the members of St. Mark and those who have supported the Academic Excellence program.

“I’ve been here long enough to know Cleburne is an outstanding, caring community, and this is a prime example,” Beard said. “I’m honored to be here.”
