Firefighters respond to coal-car fire, sports injury

By Rob Fraser/Staff Writer

Cleburne firefighters responded to a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad coal-car fire on County Road 701, near North Main Street, about 10:30 p.m. Monday night.

The fire report said firefighters had the conductor move the train to the railroad intersection at West Vaughn Road and disconnected the burning car. Firefighters had to put out 800 feet of hose from the nearest water hydrant to the fire scene. The coal-car fire was attacked from above by using a water cannon from the bucket of the fire truck tower.

When the railcar overflowed with water the firefighting operation was shut down and the railcar was released back to the train company.

Cleburne Fire Department personnel treated a 10-year-old Fort Worth boy at the Cleburne Sports Complex after he was struck in the mouth with a baseball, according to the report.

The patient’s mother told firefighters the boy lost some teeth and a dental spacer.

He was transported to Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital by CareFlite ambulance.

Other fire department calls included:

F About 9:47 a.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a diesel leak from the emergency generator at the police department. The spill was cleaned up.

F About 9 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of North Main Street, firefighters answered a call about a car fire. The driver used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out before firefighters arrived.

F About 12:44 a.m. July 5, firefighters were called to a single-car rollover on the U.S. 67 access road at Byron Stewart Park. Firefighters removed 21-year-old male driver from the vehicle through a passenger-side window. Initially a CareFlite helicopter was notified, but the helicopter had to respond from Dallas. CareFlite and fire department personnel decided to transport the victim to John Peter Smith Hospital by ambulance rather than wait on the helicopter.

F About 4:19 a.m. July 4 in the 1400 block of East Henderson Street, a 26-year-old Cleburne woman was transported to Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital after she cut her wrist punching out a window while fighting with her boyfriend.
