Heavy construction and remodeling is coming soon for Godley ISD, but not this summer.
“Right now we’re in the schematic design phase of planning,” said Superintendent Paul Smithson. “We will start some demolition within the next month, but our schedule to actually kick off construction is, tentatively, the middle of September. After that it will be phased throughout the year.”
The tentative plan is to begin work in the fall on Godley Middle School’s new weight room. Work should begin at Godley Elementary School and the Godley High School band hall in about February, Smithson said. In summer 2009, remodeling work will begin at GMS and renovations at Godley Intermediate School.
“Right now we’re trying to cram about six months of planning into about two and a half months,” Smithson said. “We’re just pedaling as hard as we can.”
The $27.78 million bond package to fund the projects passed 258-101 in a May 10 vote.
The bond package has additions and renovations planned at every GISD campus, with heavy emphasis on Godley Intermediate because it is more than 70 years old.
Work at GIS includes a new academic wing with 18 classrooms, support spaces, cafetorium, administrative offices, fine arts area. Conversion of cafeteria into library and gym renovations are also planned.
At Godley Elementary School 12 new classrooms are planned, along with library and kitchen renovations and a new activity room.
Godley Middle School will receive new lighting, paint in the main corridors, a new front entry, new sidewalks and a canopy for bus pick-up and drop-off points. Locker rooms will also be remodeled and a new access control system will be installed on the school’s front exterior doors.
At Godley High School, a fine arts addition is planned including a new band hall, practice rooms, a locker room and storage.
