Cheerleaders earn awards at camp
Special to the Times-Review
Alvarado High School’s varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders attended National Cheerleading Association cheer camp at Tarleton State University on June 8-11.
The varsity team received several awards during the week, picking up the Herkie Team Award, the Stunt Smart Award, superior performance ribbons and a spirit stick every night.
Kendra Story, Halley Harris, Jordan Grimes, Bailee Briggs, Christina Shores, and Jessica Hubbard, from the varsity and Maggie Dixon, Kylie Horton, Emily Ferguson, and Kellee Russell from the junior varsity were nominated for All-American tryouts.
Winning a spot on the NCA All-America Cheer Team were Jordan Grimes, Jessica Hubbard, Bailee Briggs, Emily Ferguson and Kellee Russell.
Leading the varsity team this year are captains Jordan Grimes, Kendra Story and Jessica Hubbard. Captains for the junior varsity are Ashley Estes and Jessica Blakney.
Captains attended leadership class each morning. Tarleton hosts a talent show each year as well, and Maggie Dixon entertained the crowd with her piano skills.
While the cheerleaders were learning new cheers and chants, Alvardo’s mascot, Sarah Head, was busy in mascot class. She came away with the best mascot award.
The girls learned new material for next football season. They will pass on some of their learning to those who attend the squad’s annual Mini Cheer Camp on July 6-9 at the high school campus this year.
Campers will learn the new material and practice their jump techniques and basic stunting skills.
The cost is $25, which includes a camp T-shirt. Registration is at 8 a.m. July 6. Each session will run from 9-11:30 a.m.
