Board votes to move campus

By Tommy Brown/Special to the Times-Review

Because of additional requirements for school districts that host their own alternative campus’ Alvarado ISD had to re-evaluate its plan to move its alternative campus to the new administrative annex.

To meet the new standards, the district would have to add a science teacher, offer counseling and would have to pull other teachers from their schedules to provide face-to-face instruction.

At the last school board meeting, the board found that the best option would be to join the co-op in Keene ISD.

The move saves the district money because the district’s expenditure will be about a third of what it would have been per student.

Moving to Keene also allows for more flexibility with the space at the new administrative annex.

“Administrators visited the Keene campus on two different occasions,” said Superintendent Chester Juroska said. “On one occasion, two AISD Board members accompanied the group. We were all impressed by the quality of the instruction and are very comfortable with our students attending school there. All of the students receive regular counseling and have daily physical education, which we have not offered in the past.”

Teachers and administrators at the alternative campus would be moved to other available positions within the district, saving the district time and money in new hires during the summer.

The board also approved the district’s summer school program, which is scheduled for June 8-July 1. Summer school will be housed at Alvarado Intermediate School and Alvarado High School.

As part of the summer school program, the board approved the purchase of 10 “My Reading Coach” stations to be used for reading support. It will also be used at Alvarado Intermediate as a Tier III reading intervention.

In other business, the board:

zx Approved bid from Allcom Solutions for $169,739.54 for purchase of district IP telephony

zx Approved the installation of a mounted projector in the AHS cafeteria for $11,536

zx Approved contracting with Mansfield ISD to auction off surplus equipment

zx Approved an Interlocal Cooperation Agreement with the city for construction, maintenance and use of a new parking lot

zx Authorized administration to bid on used buses in auction with a total price not to exceed $20,000
