Election results to be canvassed

The Joshua City Council will canvass votes from the May 10 election during a special session Tuesday.

After canvassing the votes, the council will swear in new members and officially adopt charter amendments.

All 10 propositions for city charter amendments passed. Amendments include extending council terms to three years and requiring a minimum age of 21 to run for city office.

New council member Noelyn “Butch” Isom and returning incumbents Cameron Smallwood, Tom Tallent and Mayor Merle Breitenstein will be sworn in.

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers at 101 S. Main St. in Joshua.

Rio Vista election results to be reviewed

Johnson County Commissioners will have a special meeting Tuesday to canvass the votes for the May 10 local option election in Rio Vista.

The election for the sale of liquor for off-premise consumption passed narrowly May 10 by a 118-116 vote. It was the third time the measure was voted on.

Commissioners must approve the votes to make the election offical.

“We’ll just have to meet with the elections administrator, and she’ll give us the total tabulations on these votes,” Precinct 1 Commissioner R.C. McFall said. “She’s checking to make sure all the votes are from registered voters who live where they’re supposed to live, and she’ll give us that report on Tuesday. We’ll review it, and then if we approve it, we’ll certify the election.”

Elections administrator Cheri Hawkins said she didn’t see anything unusual or out of order with the vote.

During an executive session, commissioners will also discuss a veterans service office personnel matter involving Kathryn Fasci.

Commissioners meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Room 201 of the Johnson County Courthouse.
