The city of Rio Vista and Rio Vista High School have scheduled benefit and remembrance ceremonies for the 15-year-old Rio Vista girl who died Sunday after an Amtrak train struck her 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Katelan Baker, who had recently received her hardship driver’s license, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 1:20 p.m. on Cleburne-Whitney Road in Rio Vista. The wreck occurred after Baker drove around the crossing arm and was struck by the oncoming train, according to witness reports. Baker was a freshman at RVHS.
Baker’s benefit begins at 6 p.m. at the Rio Vista Civic Center. Donations will be accepted and organizers plan to sell barbecue sandwiches, drinks and desserts. Local ministers plan to attend to provide support and words of comfort to Baker’s family and friends. A local band will also perform gospel music at 7 p.m.
Rio Vista HS will host a candle light vigil of remembrance immediately after the benefit. The ceremony, to be held in front of the high school, is open to all. Attendees should park in either high school parking lot.
The town and high school will donate all the materials, with the proceeds from sales going to help Baker’s family. Those who cannot attend, but wish to help, may donate to an account set up in Katelan Baker’s name at any branch of Wells Fargo Bank.
