Bonds, board races to greet voters

By Philip Navarrette

Saturday brings with it an election for two bond packages and several school board contests in districts across the area.

zx Cleburne — Cleburne ISD’s election has two contested seats.

Brad Allen, Wendell Dempsey and Cindy Mangrum are going for the Place 1 spot, while Lori Zachary and MJ Larrison are vying for the unexpired Place 6 term.

Place 2 incumbent and board President Stu Madison is unopposed.

Place 1 incumbent Donna Boles is not seeking re-election. Place 6 incumbent Dean Woodruff took over the seat in June after Allen gave it up so the district could hire his brother. Woodruff is not seeking re-election.

CISD candidates file for a position and are elected at-large.

zx Godley — Board Vice President Barbara Willis is running unopposed, while newcomer Ricky Roden will take over for incumbent Paul McPherson. McPherson is not seeking re-election. The vote is at-large, but Willis and Roden are the only candidates on the ballot.

Voters will also decide on the district’s $27.78 bond package that focuses on renovations and upgrades at all campuses, particularly the decades-old Godley Intermediate School where a new wing is planned if the bond passes.

zx Keene — Keene ISD is proposing a $15 million bond package to address overcrowding and alleviate student and traffic congestion at the district’s schools. Projects include additions to each campus facility and demolishing the district’s “white building” which formerly served as Keene Intermediate School.

Keene’s school board elections are in November.

zx Alvarado — Alvarado ISD’s lone contest sees four candidates challenging for the Place 5 spot, while In Place 4, board President Linda Neeley is unopposed. Place 5 candidates are Gene Russell, Cris Ratliff, Dana Walraven and William R. Edwards III. Place 5 Incumbent Vice President Doug Thompson is not seeking re-election.

zx Rio Vista — In Rio Vista, incumbents David Brunson and W.E. “Butch” Hackler have filed for re-election but newcomers Matt Wylie, Steven Clinkscales, Rhonda Johnston and Chad Stephens are challenging for the seats. The district’s election is at-large, so all candidates face each other in Saturday for the three available spots. Board Vice President Bill Marconi did not file for re-election.

zx Grandview — In Grandview, Carolyn Neff filed for a seat on the board, joining Vice President Adam Hughes and incumbent Keith Miller. The election is at-large.

zx Burleson — Burleson school board President Ronnie Johnson and incumbent Jo Ann Smith face no opposition.

zx Joshua — In Joshua, board Vice President Ronnie Galbreath and incumbent board member David Taylor are running unopposed for their respective seats.
