Police arrested a woman on a charge of driving while intoxicated Wednesday after they found her hiding behind a bush in the back of the Cleburne Police Department.
An officer, on an unrelated traffic stop, noticed Rose Marie Mathis, 32, of Cleburne driving the wrong direction on North Main Street in her Chevrolet Avalanche. Mathis drove until she encountered oncoming traffic and narrowly avoided colliding with another car at the corner of Main and Henderson streets, according to police reports.
The officer got into his car to follow Mathis but could not immediately locate her, according to reports. Another officer noticed her truck in the police department parking lot. The truck was unoccupied, locked and contained a purse on the front seat. Police found Mathis after a short search of the area. She had a cell phone and the keys to the truck with her, according to reports. Police also found her driver’s license in the purse inside the truck.
Mathis smelled of alcohol, according to reports. Police arrested and transported her to the Johnson County Corrections Center. Mathis remains jailed on a $1,000 bond.
