“I was really proud of the efforts our kids gave,” said Phyllis McPherson, Smith UIL coordinator. “It was really a lot of fun. We had more than 100 students participate, including several sixth graders.”
Although considered a seventh- and eighth-grade contest, sixth graders who pass a qualifying test may compete.
“Several of our sixth-grade students not only qualified to compete in the seventh-grade division, we had several place among the top six spots in their contests, which was very exciting,” McPherson said.
Those sixth graders were Hannah Hulsey, who received a second place medal in spelling; Joey Walters, fifth place, maps skills; Dana Siler, second place, listening skills; Quin Arrington and Foster Kelm, second place, seventh and eighth team pantomime; Ethan Fletcher, third place, poetry and Avery Hough and Garrison Roe, first place, improvisation.
