Students green up campuses with tree plantings

Special to the Times-Review

Students at Coleman and Marti Elementary Schools made their campuses a bit greener with a series of tree planting ceremonies in celebration of Earth Day and National Arbor Day.

Kathy Holland, a horticulturist with Green & Gorgeous Designs, helped Coleman fourth- and fifth-graders plant a global willow near the playground area of the campus. Holland donated the willow, along with a crape myrtle.

“I think this is a great learning activity,” Holland said. “As these students change and grow, so will this tree. These kids can come back years later and tell their own children ‘I helped plant this tree.’ That's pretty cool.”

Coleman students also planted two silver maples that were donated by Lowe’s and Home Depot.

At Marti Elementary, Student Council members led the tree planting ceremony. Students in every classroom signed their names on ribbons, which were then tied to the trees.
