Early voting under way



Early voting began Monday and continues through May 5.

Cleburne residents will vote for a city council race, a local option election and Cleburne ISD races.

The sole polling location for early voting is at the Johnson County Elections Office in the Johnson County Courthouse at 2 N. Main St. in Cleburne.

Monday’s hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as are the hours for May 5. Voting hours on all other days are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In the sole contested city council race, Craig Robert Nunn is competing against Gayle White for the Single Member District 2 seat.

In the option election, Cleburne residents will vote on a proposal to legalize the sale of beer and wine for off premise consumption. They will also vote on a measure that would allow the sale of mixed beverages in restaurants with both food and beverage certificates.

AISD teacher diagnosed with meningitis



A substitute teacher who worked Monday at Alvarado Junior High and Tuesday at Alvarado Intermediate School has been diagnosed with meningitis, but his family has been assured by doctors that he is not and never was contagious, Alvarado public information officer Tommy Brown said Wednesday.

Brown said family members have not been tested for the malady and have been able to visit the man in his room without wearing protective garments.

Alvarado school officials sent the following letter home with students from the two schools:

“Your child’s health is important to us, and we want to make you aware of a confirmed case of meningitis at your child’s campus.

“The infected person was a substitute teacher at Alvarado Junior High and Alvarado Intermediate School this week. While meningitis is very serious, the school district has been informed by the attending physician that this form of meningitis is not contagious.

“Even though the infected person is not and never was contagious, this is a good time to talk to your student about good hygiene. Washing your hands thoroughly is the most effective method of prevention.

As a precaution for the swine flu, the district’s custodial staff has already taken the appropriate steps in disinfecting the schools, which is another efficient way of inactivating any potential virus.
