Children’s safety program gives away bicycle helmets

Cleburne students will receive free coupons

Special to the Times-Review

School officials will distribute coupons good for free bicycle helmets to third-graders in Cleburne ISD schools today.

The coupons are good for one helmet per person, and only 200 helmets are available. Helmets may be picked up May 1-31 at the Cleburne Police Department, 302 W. Henderson St. Students must bring their coupon and be accompanied by a parent.

The program, Hard Hats For Little Heads, promotes bicycle safety. Sponsors include the Johnson County Medical Society, Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital, Texas Medical Association Foundation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Cleburne ISD, Cleburne Police Department and the city of Cleburne.

Community leaders implemented the bicycle safety project to educate residents on the importance of bike safety.

Cleburne police officers Mat Cox and Veronica Cox conducted Bike Safety Rodeos at CISD campuses from 2001 to 2006. This year, children will receive both a helmet and an instruction brochure on bike safety.
