Keene to review cops’ racial profiling report

Police chief says numbers acceptable

By Leia Jobe/reporter2@trcle.com

Keene Police Chief Rocky Alberti, who is scheduled to present a racial profiling report Thursday to the city council, said the numbers for 2007 are well within acceptable ranges.

The report will detail the number of arrests made in 2007 and the demographic information of the people arrested, City Secretary Barbara Fuller said.

“This is a standard, annual report that I turn in to the council for approval,” Alberti said Tuesday.

The report will compare Keene’s demographics with the races of people pulled over in traffic stops and people arrested to make sure the department’s numbers fit the community’s.

“Ours are well within the margins,” Alberti said.

The city council will also considered hiring an economic development coordinator, but no one has been recommended, Fuller said.

The council might also consider amending an agreement for the housing choice voucher program offered through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs so Keene’s liaison with the state can also represent Alvarado, Fuller said.

In a workshop session, the council might discuss a sewer policy for the city, public development districts and the preparation and delivery of city council information packets. Some of the council members have requested the city move faster to release the packets to council members before meetings, Fuller said. Council packets include agendas and other information, she said.

“We’re going to discuss how we might be a little more efficient about getting the packets out,” Fuller said.

The council meets at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at city hall, 100 N. Mockingbird in Keene. The workshop session begins at 6 p.m.
