‘Waddle’ event added to Derby

Special to the Times-Review

Two new events join this year’s annual Springfest and Ducky Derby celebrations.

The events, sponsored by Keep Cleburne Beautiful, are Kids and Community and the Buffalo Creek Waddle.

All events take place April 26 along Buffalo Creek and Butner Park in Cleburne. The Buffalo Creek Waddle runs from 10 a.m. to noon. The other events are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kids and Community provides an additional safe activity area for children and families during Cleburne’s spring events, said Donna Jackson, Kids and Community coordinator.

Free spaces remain available for the event, and KBC associates urge Cleburne and Johnson County nonprofits, community service organizations, churches, schools, Scouts and other children’s groups to participate.

Activities should provide safe, fun, environmentally friendly, educational or informational activities, games or booths suitable for children of all ages.

They should be free, or low-cost, no more than 50 cents, Jackson said. Activities may not support political candidates or opinions and should be suitable for people of all faiths, ethnicities and economic backgrounds, she said.

Organizations must clearly identify how proceeds collected from their event will be used, such as to purchase new equipment or to fund a scout outing, for example. A portion of funds collected should also be donated to KBC, Jackson said, either one third or $50.

Activities already planned include boat building and a boat race for children on Buffalo Creek and a fire-safety activity with the Cleburne Fire Department.

The Buffalo Creek Waddle is billed as a “fun-draising walk,” which stretches along the West Buffalo Creek Trail from the Wilson Street bridge to Hulen Park’s duck-pond dam. Proceeds from the walk will be used for restoring the Hulen Park dams.

Early registration is $7. Registration on April 26 is $10 and begins at 9 a.m. Residents may register early at Renaissance Christian Store, the Layland Museum, the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce and the Cleburne Public Library. For information on Kids and Community or the Buffalo Creek Waddle, call 817-556-8815.
