Last-minute candidates create races

Filing period ends for May 10 vote

By Philip Navarrette/reporter@trcle.com

As Monday’s candidate filing deadline passed, several last-minute candidates threw their name into the running for area school board elections.

Cleburne ISD’s election has two seats contested in the May 10 vote.

Lori Zachary and M.J. Larrison are vying for the Place 6 position, while Brad Allen, W.G. Dempsey and Cindy Mangrum are battling for the Place 1 spot. Dempsey and Mangrum filed Friday and Monday, respectively. Place 2 incumbent and board President Stu Madison is unopposed.

Place 1 incumbent Donna Boles did not seek re-election. Place 6 incumbent Dean Woodruff took over the seat in June after Allen gave it up so the district could hire his brother. Woodruff is not seeking re-election.

CISD candidates file for a position and are elected at-large.

Alvarado ISD saw several last-minute candidates file Monday. Gene Russell, Cris Ratliff and Dana Walraven all filed in the nick of time for the Place 5 spot, joining William R. Edwards III in vying for the position. Place 5 incumbent Vice President Doug Thompson is not seeking re-election. In Place 4, board President Linda Neeley is unopposed.

In Rio Vista, incumbents David Brunson and W.E. “Butch” Hackler have filed for re-election. Newcomers Matt Wylie, Steven Clinkscales, Rhonda Johnston and Chad Stephens have also filed. The district’s election is at-large, so all four candidates will face each other in May for the three available spots. Board Vice President Bill Marconi did not file for re-election.

In Grandview, Carolyn Neff filed for a seat on the board. She joins board Vice President Adam Hughes and incumbent Keith Miller. Both filed for re-election. The election is at-large.

In Burleson, board President Ronnie Johnson and incumbent Jo Ann Smith filed for re-election and face no opposition.

In Joshua, board Vice President Ronnie Galbreath and incumbent board member David Taylor are running unopposed for their respective seats.

Godley ISD’s election finds terms ending for board Vice President Barbara Willis and board member Paul McPherson. Willis filed for re-election, while newcomer Ricky Roden also wants to join the board in place of McPherson, who did not file. In addition to the at-large school board race, a bond election is also on the district’s May 10 election ballot.

Keene ISD holds its school board elections in November, but a bond election is on the ballot in May for KISD.
