Annual March for Meals fund campaign begins

Special to the Times-Review

Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties began its 2007 March for Meals campaign March 1.

The campaign will include an awareness media campaign of its local services in each community, the national Mayors for Meals Day on March 21, and a barbecue benefit for Ellis County on March 31.

“We are celebrating 30 years serving the homebound in Johnson County,” said Amy Jackson, director of development. “We are excited about our March For Meals campaign and hope to raise awareness of senior hunger in our community through our activities.”

Mayors for Meals Day events include all the mayors of the county delivering meals on March 21.

“We are excited about having our local mayors participate in our event,” Jackson said. “Last year was a huge success and the mayors were very supportive of our program.”

In addition, Meals-on-Wheels will host its second annual Ellis County Benefit BBQ on March 31 in Rockett. The benefit will consist of an evening of food, fun and entertainment, and an opportunity to raise money for the program.

“This will be an evening to thank our supporters, as well as bring more awareness to the work we are doing,” Jackson said.

The organization is seeking sponsors for the event, with packages available from $100 to $1,000, with varying benefits for each. Individual tickets are also available for $25 each.

March for Meals is a national campaign in which Meals-on-Wheels is a participant. It is held to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community. Senior nutrition programs across the United States promote March for Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment, and fundraising initiatives.
