Candidates increasing in area elections

Several seats still unopposed so far

By Philip Navarrette/reporter@trcle.com

The number of participants in the May 10 area school board elections continues to grow as two more candidates filed last week for available seats.

Cleburne ISD’s election has candidates running for the all three available spots, with the Place 6 seat contested. Lori Zachary and Mary Jane “M.J.” Larrison are vying for the position, while board President Stu Madison filed for re-election for his Place 2 spot, and former board member Brad Allen filed for the available Place 1 seat.

Place 1 incumbent Donna Boles said she is not seeking re-election. Place 6 incumbent Dean Woodruff took over the seat in June after Allen gave it up so his brother could take a job with the district. Woodruff said then and maintains he will not seek re-election. Allen, Madison, Zachary and Larrison are the only candidates in the CISD election as of Friday.

In Grandview, incumbent Keith Miller filed for re-election, joining Vice President Adam Hughes, who filed for re-election the previous week. They faced no opposition as of Friday.

In Burleson, board President Ronnie Johnson’s Place 3 seat and incumbent Jo Ann Smith’s Place 4 seat are up. Both have filed for re-election but face no opposition as of Friday.

In Rio Vista, incumbent David Brunson filed for re-election. Board Vice President Bill Marconi and W.E. “Butch” Hackler are also up for re-election, but no one has filed for the open positions.

In Alvarado, Place 4’s Linda Neeley, the board president, filed for re-election. In Place 5, Vice President Doug Thompson’s spot is up this year, but Neeley is the only person to file in the district’s election.

Joshua ISD board Vice President Ronnie Galbreath filed for re-election, though board member David Taylor has not. The two seats are the only open spots, and Galbreath is the only filer as of Friday.

Godley ISD’s election finds terms ending for board Vice President Barbara Willis and board member Paul McPherson. As of Friday, no one has filed for the positions. A bond election is also on the district’s May 10 election ballot.

Keene ISD holds its school board elections in November, but a bond election is on the ballot.

The last day to file is March 10.
