Stock show queen, ambassador selected

By Monica Green/features@trcle.com

A new queen reigns in Johnson County. So does a new ambassador. The 2008 Johnson County Junior Livestock Show Queen and Ambassador Contest was held Feb. 9 at Godley High School.

Loni Woolley, the daughter of Larry and Leslie Woolley, was crowned queen and received a tiara, sash and trophy. She represented Grandview 4-H.

“I’m really excited because I’ve been going to the stock show ever since I was 8 years old,” Woolley said. “My sister was stock show queen, and I definitely didn’t want her to be one up on me.

“When I was a kid I always wanted to be queen and pass out the ribbons to the winners at the stock show. It was really awesome to hear my name called as queen because it’s something I’ve always wanted.”

Roddy Looper, the son of Randy and Sue Looper, was chosen as ambassador and received a belt buckle and trophy. Looper represented Grandview FFA.

“I think it’s a tremendous honor to be ambassador,” Looper said. “It’s a chance for me to give back to the stock show because they’ve given me so much. They’ve taught me leadership and work ethic, and this is a chance for me to give back to them.”

Both are seniors from Grandview High School, and both received a $10,000 scholarship from the Marti Foundation. George and Margaret Marti presented the winners with the award.

“It’s pretty awesome that Mr. Marti is so generous to be giving a $10,000 scholarship for the queen and ambassador every year,” Woolley said.

Woolley plans to attend Texas Tech University, and Looper says he plans to attend Tarleton State University.

“[The scholarship] is great,” Looper said. “It’s gonna be a big financial help for me and my parents to cut down on the costs for college.”

Woolley and Looper have both been involved with the stock show their entire lives and each have shown animals for 10 years.

To fulfill their duties as queen and ambassador, Woolley and Looper will announce the winners at the Johnson County Junior Livestock Show and hand out awards at each contest.

Seven senior girls and 11 senior boys from Johnson County participated in the contest. Each went through interviews by a panel of judges, gave a two-minute speech and answered two impromptu questions.

Dean Black of Friendship 4-H club and Bryce Menzies of Cleburne FFA were runners-up.
