10/15/06 Letters to the editor
Taylor needs to check his facts
Dear Editor:
I have just received a piece of campaign literature from the Van Taylor campaign that boggles the mind. “Your eyes don’t lie” printed in large letters, then “Chet Edwards let seniors down and he doesn’t deserve re-election.” What a piece of poppycock!
The Alliance for Retired Americans gives Chet a 90-percent positive rating for 2005 and an 89-percent positive rating overall. Not quite in line with what Van Taylor is spouting, is it?
Another claim made is that he supported “raiding $1.4 trillion from the Social Security Trust fund, endangering future benefits.” He voted against that bill, the Social Security Account Protection Bill, because the Republican majority in the House voted against an amendment that required 100 percent of the Social Security Trust Fund surplus be transferred to a Federal Reserve Bank and held in trust for the Social Security System. The original bill called for revising the Social Security Act by adding federal budget surpluses (not exactly something we can count on) to an interim Social Security account.
Chet Edwards also supported “lockbox” legislation that would safeguard Social Security and Medicare surpluses by prohibiting the use of trust funds for other programs and projects. The bill was defeated by the Republican majority in the House.
It would behoove this Republican challenger to get his facts straight. Senior citizens know how to check facts, and there are more trustworthy sources than his Web site to get the straight story.
Sincerely,

We need to be able to trust those in uniform
Dear Editor:
I’m writing in regard to the behavior of the Cleburne police officers with the minor, Stevie Johnson. When I read in the paper of how the officers talked to her I was in total disgust.
Of all the people who I thought I could trust it would be the ones in uniform. Adults are supposed to be role models for children. Being that Stevie was a minor and a teenager, her vocabulary to the officers was nothing out of the abnormal in my opinion. In actuality, not everyone is brought up by two parents in a “Leave it to Beaver” world.
This child had cried out for help way before the tragedy occurred. And not only the ones in uniform let her down.
The ones we trust like doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and we adults in society let her down.
In closing, next time we hear a child, teenager or an adult crying out for help, we as a society should hear, listen and help.
If we can’t trust the ones in uniform, we can we trust?

Thanks from Antique Alley organizers
Dear Editor:
The September 2006 Antique Alley event was a great success and enjoyed by many. Our communities of Cleburne, Grandview and Maypearl really set the pace, illustrating how positive results can be achieved when people reach out and work together for a common goal. The success of this event is due to the efforts of so many groups and individuals working together in promoting this economic opportunity that benefits so many. We never could have enjoyed this kind of success without everyone pulling together!
This event brought approximately 30,000 people to our neighborhoods. Positive economic effects were felt throughout the community. Vendors, RV Parks, bed and breafasts, and hotels, restaurants, convenience stores, gas stations and participating land owners all benefit greatly from this event.
Isn’t it great to see what can be accomplished when we all work together! A big thank you to all the folks who helped in the September event is due. If anyone is overlooked, we regret the exclusion.
Many thanks go to those that contributed their services, time and efforts in coordinating Antique Alley, to those donating the use of private land in the downtown areas, lots and electricity and to those that assisted with group advertising:
