Thanks to those who helped with fire

Dear Editor:



I work at HairZone next door to Cellular Planet where a car fire took place recently. I wanted to take the time to write and let everyone know the fire was contained and kept from getting out of control by some heroic people who worked in the surrounding businesses. If it wasn’t for those guys running out with the mandatory fire extinguishers, the fire would have gotten out of control quickly and the building more than likely would have burned down. The fire department took 20 minutes to get to the scene and a countless number of extinguishers were used. It would be great if these people were recognized or spoken about for what they did to help.

Relay For Life has another successful campaign

Dear Editor:



Once again, Johnson County, you have embraced the American Cancer Society Relay For Life and made it possible for us to record the most successful event ever. You have made it possible for us to contribute the highest amount of money to date toward the goals of RFL which are education, research, advocacy and services. Even though first indications were that our receipts were less than the past couple of years, when all money was deposited, we had another record year. Johnson County has now hosted five RFL events and has contributed a net amount which is well over a half-million dollars to the American Cancer Society because of Relay For Life.

We actually didn’t have as many teams as we have had in the past, but those who participated again worked diligently to raise their team money. Many of our teams were honored at a luncheon hosted by the ACS for raising over $1,500 each, and two teams brought in well over $10,000 each. These team participants and their team captains deserve a huge amount of praise and appreciation for their pursuit of lofty fundraising goals.

In addition, we appreciate the record number of sponsors who want to be a part of RFL and show their support by contributing toward expenses necessary to host such an event. This large amount of support also helped this event to be so successful.

We appreciate everyone who participated in the 2007 Relay For Life. If you were unable to attend this year, start making plans to attend in 2008. Survivors, sponsors, participants, teams and team captains, I challenge you to begin working now to raise your team money. You make the difference in a successful Relay For Life, and you make the difference in defeating this dreaded disease, cancer.

Thanks from McDonald family

Dear Editor:



Last month your response to our daughter, Nicole McDonald, and her best friend, Kelly Clark’s, accident was overwhelming. I know there were people all over this community and surrounding areas praying for both families. I was even told we had been put on a national prayer chain. There is no way we could say thank you to each one of you personally, but please know that your prayers have been felt by us.

We would like to say a sincere thank you for every prayer, phone call, card, beautiful floral arrangement, snack foods sent to the hospital, meals sent to our home and other gifts of love we received. We are truly blessed by God to have such wonderful family and friends.

Barkman a prosecutor or defense attorney?

Dear Editor:



Patrick Barkman writes more like a prosecuting attorney with a weak case than a defense attorney.

Talk about “self-righteous blowhard Republicans and their moral implosions” and “lie down with dogs and get up with Republicans” makes me think that he is using only one ear and eye when making these judgment calls. I have trouble separating the actions of the two party memberships in personal behavior, but since he brought the subject up, let’s look at a few things.

Sen. Craig, of Republican Idaho, was apparently caught with some pants down and, if the allegations are true, should retire because of his activity, his misrepresentation of his character and for bringing shame on his office, his state and his voting public. Although not considered criminal acts, how about immoral, or does that count these days? The Republican governor can, by law, appoint a replacement of his choice, but one shouldn’t compare any state’s politics to Louisiana’s.

The fact that the American public did have knowledge of Willie Clinton’s roving eye and cheating heart is what disillusions me about the American public’s reasoning in its choices. Not “splinters in neighbor’s eyes,” Patrick, but 2X4’s, which are hard to miss. I won’t even comment on Barney Franks other than to say he must get his voters what they want, and they do not worry about trysts of this nature.

To compare Kennedy to Lincoln is shocking, as their principle similarity was being president. Facts indicate that the three Kennedy boys left their morals with their priest. Ted, the noted “bridge deserter of Mary Jo Kopeckne,” must feed his flock of sheep lots of sugar to stay in office. As for Fred Thompson, he is smart enough to campaign with ideas that work and shouldn’t be predetermined guilty of ignoring and circumventing the constitution until proven guilty. Patrick is right about him not starring with a monkey as Reagan did nor as Hillary does!

It seems wrong for a defense lawyer to prejudge veteran Gen. Petraeus who has witnessed unimaginable patriotism, heroism and savage carnage while his troops are striving to protect us so that we can speak this freely, and I believe that he should be proven a toad before judgment and sentencing?

I feel that very few Americans are in favor of the “General Betrayus” clown act, a ridiculous group. The so called “War Party” has a heck of a long way to go to catch up with the perpetrators of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, each of which claimed the lives of many, many thousands of Americans sent to fight and die under the leadership of Truman, Kennedy and Johnson of “the Peace Party.”

Countless thousands of Koreans, Vietnamese and other Asians were also victims of our leaders’ whims in those unneeded and tragically conducted wars. God bless our veterans and all victims of past and present wars. Today, less raving and more troop appreciation by Congress would be classy.

It is sorrowful that many people are so economically affected by the changed mortgage rates. People who live way above their means often get caught in terrible binds when it is too easy to borrow big bucks. However, potential voting power will nudge “big brudder” to bail them out. “Learning the hard way” is through a difficult curriculum, but will it stick?

I agree with Patrick that Gov. Rick Perry and President Bush have often been distracted from their job descriptions. No doubt, he already has candidates selected who can and who will do better! President Bush has detractors now, but I feel that history will prove that he made some sincere and proper moves, thus saving the world from much of the grief it would otherwise have suffered.
