The real facts on the war in Iraq



Dear Editor:



After reading Holly Fisher’s letter to the editor Sept. 3, I was prompted to express my views on Iraq and the war on Terrorism. Apparently Fisher, along with Cindy Sheehan, are so out of tune with “what’s happening” in the world they can’t see the forest for the trees.

When President Bush informed us at the beginning of the war with Iraq, the reason and purpose thereof, he should have given the public a short history lesson. That being, the war with Iraq was just the beginning of war on terrorist activities. We experienced a large-scale terrorist attack when Iran took over our embassy and held our people hostage for over 400 days. That took place under the Carter administration and little was done to combat terrorism at that time.

Since then there have been large and small terrorist attacks against the United States and each time we wrung our hands and shook our heads but did nothing. Now we have a president who has drawn a line and is willing to enforce it. Thank God!

He also forewarned us this would be a long drawn out war (we are now in World War III in case anyone hasn’t figured it out). As a retired Marine officer I would much rather be engaged in combat in somebody else’s backyard than in my own. As for Sheehan it seems obvious to me she must have attended the “Jane Fonda school of protest and dissent.”

Please everyone, stop and take a look at the whole picture, not just a small piece of it.

Alvarado mayor thanks town for support



Dear Editor:



To the wonderful citizens of Alvarado: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! As usual, the community of Alvarado displayed what makes us strong as a community — you gave of your time and funds to help the devastated Israeli city of Kiryat Shmona and graciously hosted Minister Eliezer Sandberg as he visited us and participated in the sister city ceremony Sept. 9.

He stated that he was astounded at the kindness, friendliness and compassion shown by the people of Alvarado. During the few days that I was privileged to visit with him and get to know him, I know that he is sincere when he makes such a statement. The efforts and commitment that we made as a city have already been multiplied.

My prayer is that Alvarado will become a model and other communities will become involved. My gratitude to the ones who donated gifts, provisions and facilities for the ceremony and to Minister Sandberg.

God bless you and God bless Alvarado.

Democracy loses



AZDear Editor:



When we sacrifice more for our fears than for democracy, we will always have more fear than democracy. Citizens need to consider why they are being spoon fed fear instead of facts, and ask themselves why and who benefits? It’s a sure bet, democracy loses.

Edwards deserves to be re-elected



Dear Editor:



In just under two months, we will be going to the polls to vote for the candidates that best serve us. There is a “mood” for change spreading like wild fire. But one incumbent candidate deserves to be re-elected to represent us here in north and central Texas. I am speaking most specifically about U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards.

Chet has represented us with the utmost integrity and honesty that one would expect in an elected official. He is constantly here in the district working and fighting for the people that he represents. His offices are scattered throughout the area as well as here in Cleburne. One other extremely important fact is Chet’s relationship with the veterans of Johnson County.

Edwards has always worked hard to support our veterans and military retirees. He is a national leader on defense and military issues and has received awards from countless veterans and military retiree organizations. Just last year, Chet led the fight to ensure the VA Health Care System had enough funds to ensure they wouldn’t shut down. That means very much to our local veterans.

The local VFW Post in Alvarado is quite often visited by Chet and his staff, not just at election time. He is always wanting to know if there is anything that he can do to help. He devotes time to spend with veterans on a one-on-one basis, much to the approval of our post commander and the officers.

Many of our members are served by the VA hospitals in Dallas and Waco, Chet’s fighting hard to make sure the Waco VA Hospital remains open and a first-rate facility. In Johnson County as well as the state of Texas, veterans have no better friend in Congress than Chet Edwards. Please vote for Chet this November, he deserves to be re-elected and our veterans need him!
