8/26/2007 Letters to the Editor

Keep on voting for the Democrats

Dear Editor:

About 30 years ago I read a short note on a church bulletin one Sunday that went about like so:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that enough voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, these voters will always vote for the candidates who promise them the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.” It was credited to Scottish Professor Alexander Tyler at the University of Edinburgh.

Snopes.com does not find this paragraph in its records, but it sure does seem to be what the Democrats are striving for.

The latest boondoggle they (Sen. Chris Dodd among others) are advocating is for the federal government to expand Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac so they can absorb the trillions of dollars in about 1,300,000 “liar loans” and “no document loans” that the greedy financial institutions illegally made to people with a lousy or no credit history and have the American taxpayer foot the bill.

Keep on voting for those Democrats; it isn’t the Republicans who are pushing for this waste of our tax dollars. You might even call your congressman and object to bailing out the financial institutions and people who put nothing down and lied to get a loan. Just a note: 40 years ago it took 30 percent down in New Jersey to buy a home.

Thanks from CPD Family Association

Dear Editor:

The Cleburne Police Department Family Association had its first event Sunday night at Splash Station and considers it a huge success. We had many officers, support staff and family members in attendance for swimming, pizza, cold drinks, fun and fellowship.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who supported this effort: Chief Terry Powell, Jo Bayne, Barrera’s Restaurant, Mr. Jim’s Pizza, Chicken Express, H-E-B Grocery Store, Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Splash Station and the city of Cleburne, Kathy Simmons and Glen Ball. Without your support and encouragement this first event would not have been possible.

Thank you again!

Their cups runneth over

Dear Editor:

I would like to hear Paul Harvey daily because of his observations concerning people and events. The truth of one comment has rung a bell in my mind years after hearing that certain comment, “It seems that everyone in the world wants to come and stay in the U.S., but there isn’t room for everyone.” This statement was made by Mr. Harvey years ago, and its truth is quite evident today. Each person who has come here has done so for a reason, be it relief from political oppression, economical betterment, religious decision, career opportunity, family ties or the dreamed about many freedoms offered to immigrants, legal or illegal. Many stay because of our “easy systems,” which are professionally taken advantage of by millions. The “system of freebies” has been abused by generations of Americans, being allowed by our congressional leaders, not because of benevolence but because of politics. That is terrible because of the lifetimes of demeaning and cultural effects welded to those generations. Those lives were wasted because of sick and ignorant politics and politicians. It may have started as genuine welfare, but progressed into decades of disastrous waste of both material and of people’s lives.

Paul Harvey probably had Mexico in mind, since a good part of that population is here or headed here, but whether he did or not, the illegals are here, some doing good work, others using the systems mentioned above. Do not consider them as “poor and oppressed” as most workers earn four or five times as much money as they did at home, they enjoy free health care, free K-12 schooling, food stamps, federal welfare checks, WIC nutritional programs for babies, earned income credits up to $4,200 per year, and low-income housing subsidies. Because of these perks, they are able to send billions of dollars to Mexico and drive, eat and dress well and certainly have retained and proliferated their culture. Hardly oppressed, according to the definition.

Then, there are the ones who have also come into the open arms of this society with malice in mind. They also use the freedoms and systems to openly propagate their insidious hate for this country while not using time or effort to compare what is here with what is there. Their mind-set zeal to destroy the open Christian culture and its believers of love and forgiveness in order to replace them with a semisecretive philosophy of hate, control by shari’a dictatorial laws, and lack of true forgiveness is not understandable to any with rational minds. It is only by studying, and by awareness and political and Judeo-Christian dedication that we can prevent this Islamic radical faction from gaining more acceptance in America. The so called nonradical Muslims must in all ways separate themselves, and soon, from the violent Islamic arm to gain my trust and acceptance. I am fed up with political correctness, nonprofiling and turning the other cheek. So much of what we had is already given away, so let us get a grip, dig in and use the weight and muscle of our influence, our minds and our words to retain our culture and its freedoms. I can’t rely on Big Brother to do this job without our persistent prompting.

I am worried about the many lives lost and the money spent in the Iraq war and also the costs of these social, cultural and economic invasions at home. It’s easy to see why we have such a deficit and are “borrowing” money from China. To quote Harvey, “and that’s the rest of the story.” Or is it?
