Watch out for the squirrels
During my early years as a young man, our family had to hunt to have food on the table, not unlike other families in the past. Among the animals we used to hunt included squirrels. Getting my shotgun, I would head for the squirrels’ habitat.
In doing so it was necessary for me to study and learn the habits of the animal. As many of the hunters do today, that is necessary to outsmart the animal you are hunting. In studying and learning the squirrels’ character it was obvious that they are somewhat unpredictable.
This history brings me to the point. Too many squirrels are being run over by automobiles. It doesn’t mean that drivers intend to do so, but many are becoming a grease spot on our city streets.
I would like to inform the driving masses that when they see a squirrel along the curb of the road, it is a mistake to assume that it will stay there as you pass by. Instead, the animal will more than likely run in front of your vehicle to get to a favorite tree on the other side of the road. Therefore, “squash,” it’s gone.
Ninety percent of the time they will do this. There are a lot of young ones running around that have recently been born.
If you see one close to the curb on either side, be prepared to stop. That way you will have saved the little critters, which, by the way, are in the rodent family. We didn’t know that when we used them for food, but they were tasty back then.

Mr. Bonds needs to realize who is at fault
I told myself I would never bother to write in this paper again. I cancelled my subscription because of the Ann Coulter editorials. I buy one occasionally on Sunday for the TV guide.
I seldom read any of these, but Maryjane Brady caught my attention. I was glad to hear her opinion. I totally agree with her. Mr. Bonds is a bore. If that is all you can come up with along with Coulter then it’s too much to take.
With all the gripes and complaints of Bonds, does he realize Bush and company caused it all? They have had total control now for eight years and things have gone downhill. Runaway inflation, but let’s not call it that, recession, but let’s call that slowdown. Give me a break. Call it what it is and let’s realize who is at fault. I think most do. Since the national polls say only 27 percent believe anything Bush says or does, Mr. Bonds hasn’t woke up yet.
Wake up people. Vote these scoundrels out of office this year. I could write more but unlike Mr. Bonds’ long-winded self-aggrandizement pieces I won’t.

Thanks from Relay For Life chairwoman
As chair of this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life committee, I would like to thank residents of Johnson County for their generosity and support. Seventy-five teams participated in this year’s event, raising more than $120,000 for the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and service programs. The outstanding support received proves that the people of Johnson County are truly committed to the fight against cancer.
I want to applaud the 250 survivors who participated in the opening lap and the survivor recognition. They are the reason we continue the fight because each year there can be more and more people living wonderful lives following a diagnosis of cancer.
A special thanks goes to the many volunteers who worked to make this event a success. The Relay For life committee did an outstanding job of putting the event together. Thank you to all of our sponsors.
Again, thank you for supporting the American Cancer Society, and remember, it’s not too early to become involved in Johnson County Relay For Life 2009.
Sincerely,
Michelle McKinney

Thanks from Golden Ager team
I’d like to thank a few people who made our fundraiser for cancer a big success. I’d like to thank the Cleburne Police Department for sending its SWAT truck to our barbecue and mini carnival. Thanks to Albertson’s for it’s baked goods, Steve Mahan and his band for our entertainment and to Billy Langston for cooking the brisket for our barbecue. I’d also like to thank everyone who helped make all our fundraising events a huge success. A great, big special thank you goes to Homer Young and his family for getting our wheelchairs for our wheelchair team to the track.
I am proud of our wheelchair team and the effort we made in the Relay For Life event. I hope we can find a cure to knock out cancer. Our team went over our $3,200 from last year. We made $3,588 this year.
Thank you all for our success. There is still life in us Golden Agers after all. If I have forgotten or left anyone out, thanks to all of you.
