2/11/07 Letters to the editor

Thanks from Brewer family

Dear Editor:

We the tornado victims of Rio Vista want to give thanks to everyone who helped us in our time of need. We are the Brewer family. We are blessed in so many ways. We have our family alive and well. We’re also blessed by all in and around our community.

Everyone pulled together to help salvage and pick up the pieces left from our home from the Dec. 29 storm. All of you gave from your hearts and your homes so our family could start over.

We felt so lost, so destroyed, so empty with nowhere to go. We just want to say thank you all, and God bless you all for the loving care. And thank you for all of the hugs.

We, the Brewer family, are truly blessed.

Wildlife needs to be left alone

Dear Editor:

I was very disturbed to read in the Feb. 7 Times-Review of the upcoming Xtreme Predator Calling Contest. Our wildlife already has more than enough to contend with. Population growth, habitat decline and destruction, rural home building, and gas well and pipeline construction are just a few of the factors putting the squeeze on our wild animals. Now comes a contest on who can amass the most points based on creatures killed.

I do not accept Brian Doty’s contention that he is providing a valuable service to area ranchers. Most landowners are perfectly capable of handling predator problems that may crop up on their property. Even the gentleman quoted in the article said that “it’s not unusual to lose a few animals every two or three years to coyotes.” This is not reason enough to loose teams of hunters on the little wildlife left in our state.

I hope my grandchildren grow up quickly to see, in the wild, the foxes, bobcats, and coyotes Mr. Doty is targeting. Are there actually any mountain lions left in Texas? I’m sure they would be comforted to know that they’re worth 200 points! This is less about sport, it seems to me, and more about money being made by the organizers. Another sad day for our beleaguered environment.
