Fun Time pays its tax debt

The Johnson County Tax Office has secured full payment of all property taxes due from Fun Time RV in Johnson County, County Tax Collector Scott Porter said Thursday.

The Keene RV dealership closed down last week after GE Commercial Distribution pulled its floor plan financing and seized more than 500 RVs from the premises, according to Daily RV Report.

Judge John Neill of the 18th District Court issued a tax warrant on Monday for property taxes totalling $434,578 owed by the dealership.

The total included prior years, including 2009, as well as estimated property taxes for 2010, Porter said.

Taxing entities involved included Johnson County, Keene, Cleburne ISD, Johnson County Emergency Services District No. 1 and Hill College Cleburne Campus.

“At this point, we’ve secured all payment in full,” Porter said. “We’re completely out of the picture now and have had no more involvement with Fun Time since late Wednesday.”

Porter stressed that it was not the Johnson County Tax Office that closed down Fun Time.

“Once the floor plan was pulled, and trailers began leaving, that’s when the tax office became proactive by obtaining a tax warrant to make sure the property taxes were satisfied,” Porter said.

The tax office concentrated on Fun Time’s property and new inventory, Porter said, and played no part in holding up the release of RVs and trailers on the premises.

A woman who answered the telephone at Fun Time on Tuesday said customers wishing to retrieve their trailers should call 817-517-2200. Calls to that number went unanswered Thursday.

Attempts to reach Fun Time officials have likewise proved unsuccessful.

Help may be available for those who purchased new trailers but have not taken possession or who still have paper tags or have been involved in trade-in deals.

“We knew there were a lot of consumers unfortunately stuck in the middle of this,” Porter said. “So we called the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. They told us that the consumers need to contact them directly to file a formal dealer complaint, and that they will help walk them through the process at that point.”

Customers should call the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Dealer Enforcement Division at 800-687-7846. They can also visit www.txdmv.gov, where they can download a formal complaint form.

Employees not paid

Randy Hoover said he and fellow employees were called to Fun Time on Wednesday with a promise of getting paid for their last week.

About 20 employees were present at the site when Hoover was there, but none, including Hoover, were paid, he said.

Employees checks from the previous pay period bounced as well, Hoover said.

Hoover said the company went through cutbacks and layoffs over the past year and a half, but that the employees had no idea closure was coming.

Employees on lunch were called on their cell phones to come back to the office for a meeting, said Hoover, who worked as an assistant PDI warranty manager. At that time, employees were told to go home as the place was closed, he said.

Hoover said he thinks 80 to 100 employees lost their jobs.
