Yuri Trushin will be selecting up to 10 art assistants who will help in the creation of Art Alley, an urban art mural to be painted in downtown Cleburne from July 26 to Aug. 6.
An art competition will be used for the selection of the assistants. Winners will be picked by members of the Downtown Cleburne Association Art Committee and Trushin, a master artist. All entries must be received by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Assistants will gain hands-on experience and learn painting techniques from this master artist. They may assist in gridding the walls, preparing the surface, transferring the art design, color blocking and some detail work. Yuri will oversee the artistic conception of the entire project and will be present during all work on the mural.
Assistants will donate their time and skill toward this community project and will not receive compensation. However, assistants will be permitted to sign their names to the mural, use pictures of the project in their personal portfolios, receive a certificate of participation signed by Yuri Trushin, and participate in future art shows sponsored by the Downtown Cleburne Association.
The contest is open to students who have completed ninth grade as well as adults who live in Cleburne and the surrounding areas.
Assistants must be able to stand for two hours at a time, climb a ladder and remain in the outdoor heat for two hours at a time.
Assistants must be able to work approximately six hours per day each weekday over a two-week period, as determined by the lead artist. Most hours will be early in the morning and in the late afternoon/ evening as to avoid the hottest part of the day.
Assistants also must show proof of medical and hospitalization insurance and must sign a release of liability form prior to working on the mural. (For insurance purposes, assistants will only be allowed to work on the first story portion of the murals.)
All decisions by the judges in the art contest will be final.
Artists should submit examples of their work expressing competency in representational art, that is, landscapes, buildings and street scenes. Nonrealistic and modern art will not be considered. Up to three pieces of art per artist may be submitted.
Artists may submit electronic copies in jpeg file format large enough for printing on a letter size sheet of paper. E-mail these directly to maestro@yurius.net.
Paper copies fitting on a letter size sheet of paper may be mailed to: Art Contest, Downtown Cleburne Association, P.O. Box 1595, Cleburne, TX 7033.
Letter-sized copies can also be dropped off at The Layland Museum located at 201 N. Caddo St. in downtown Cleburne.
Copies won’t be returned, so don’t bring originals. Please clearly indicate the name and contact information on each item submitted.
