Court to address overweight trucks

The Johnson County Commissioners Court will address the issue of overweight trucks in the county and how to enforce existing laws that prohibit them at Monday’s meeting.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Rick Bailey said a workshop will be held to discuss the problem of overweight trucks that damage county roads and to relay the message that commissioners will not tolerate overweight trucks in the county.

“We’ll talk about the overweight permits and just the abuse. It’s become the norm to run overweight in our county, but the laws have always been in effect that govern that,” he said. “We are going to have to enforce the laws that have already been written for years regarding the overweight trucks in the county.”

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the legal weight for a truck can be determined using the number of axles on the truck and a permissible weight table provided by the TxDOT Web site.

“That is probably the single biggest issue that we have in the county regarding the roadways right now, with the noncompliance in the trucking industry with the overweight water and gravel haulers in Johnson County,” said Precinct 2 Commissioner John Matthews. “We’ve been doing it for about two years now. As a matter of fact, over the last two years we’ve written over $730,000 in overweight citations.”

Bailey said commissioners will consider approving a new contract for the pick up and disposal of used tires and rubber recycling for Precincts 1 and 3.

They will also consider whether to leave Constable Bill Pierce at the jail or relocate him to the new Precinct 1 building because the sheriff has more room, Bailey said.

The commissioners plan to finalize a tax increment financing district in Joshua during executive session after four years of work, Matthews said.

As far as work on the adult probation building, the old band hall for justice of the peace and Precinct 1 offices, and the third floor expansion of the Guinn Justice Center, Bailey said they are waiting to complete the punch list for the Precinct 1 building and finalize everything.

But the proposed Texas 121 project is stagnant for the time being.

“It’s a lame duck, I guess, until the North Texas Transportation Authority and TxDOT pull together to work as one. That’s just the way it is. Until those two different entities get together, we’re just talking about it,” he said.

The court meets at 9 a.m. Monday morning in Room 201 of the Johnson County Courthouse at 2 Main St. in Cleburne.
