House passes funding
Funding for the final stage of renovations to Hamm Creek Park, included in 2010 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill, passed the U.S. House on Thursday by a 308-114 vote.
U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, said he secured $543,000 in funding for the project in the bill. Edwards serves as vice chairman of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee and was a member of the House-Senate conference committee that wrote the bill. Edwards said he expects the bill to pass the Senate and be signed into law by President Obama.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers began renovations on the park, located west of Rio Vista, several years ago. The Johnson County Commissioners Court later agreed to assume maintenance and operations costs of the 191 acre park.
“Working with local leaders, I am grateful that we have been successful in securing funds that will enable us to complete the renovations to Hamm Creek Park,” Edwards said. “As the father of two young sons, it is gratifying to know that thousands of Johnson County families will be able to enjoy this beautiful new park for years to come.”
The funding will help construct a campground with 35 campsites, rest rooms, group shelters, trails, a playground, and a water well for an independent water source.
Since 2005, Edwards has secured about $5 million for the project.
“Congressman Edwards and I discussed the possibility of more funds because some of the funds we had to set aside for a low-water boat ramp and some other things would’ve put us above our original budget,” said Johnson County Commissioner Rick Bailey. “So I commend Edwards for his help and the commissioners for their foresight in applying for these extra funds. The water well is a big deal as it will allow us to be self sufficient out there.”
