Garbage pickup changed in Keene

Keene council members voted to change city garbage pick up from twice to once a week during Thursday’s meeting.

Trash must also be left out in containers instead of being picked up by hand, said City Accountant Bill Guinn. Details remained to be worked out, he said, and the change will go into effect sometime after the first of the year.

Allied Waste Services, the city’s garbage pick up service, requested and received a slight increase from the city for their services, Guinn said. Council members voted not to pass the increase on to residents at this time, he said.

The council approved a memorandum limiting idling times for tractor trailers and other large trucks to not more than five minutes. The move is a statewide effort to reduce emissions pollution, Guinn said. The Keene council will still have to pass a city ordinance to enact the rule, he said.

Council members also voted to sell obsolete public works department equipment to raise money for a street sweeper in the amount of $10,500. Earlier this month, council members voted down a proposal to buy the sweeper because it had not been budgeted in the current year’s budget.
