Fort Worth attorney Jerry Loftin is accused of kissing a court reporter in the 249th District Courtroom, located in Cleburne’s Guinn Justice Center, on Aug. 11.
A Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy issued Loftin a citation for assault by offensive contact, which is a Class C misdemeanor. If found guilty, Loftin faces a fine of up to $500.
Loftin submitted a letter Wednesday to County Attorney Bill Moore and Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Ronny McBroom pleading not guilty and requesting a jury trial.
The trial, which will be held in the Precinct 1 JP Court, will probably be scheduled for the first week in October, McBroom said. The specific date depends on the schedules of the county attorneys, McBroom said.
Moore said Loftin was representing a client in the 413th District Court on an unrelated matter at the time and apparently walked into the 249th District Court during a break.
Loftin was standing behind the court reporter, who is female, talking to someone else when she asked him to be quiet, Moore said. Then Moore said Loftin allegedly bent down and kissed her on the cheek.
Danny Burns, an attorney representing Loftin, said he expects the matter will be resolved in Loftin’s favor.
