Keene elections set
Three Keene City Council seats are up for a vote on Nov. 3, but only one race contains more than one candidate.
Wednesday marked the deadline to file for the election.
In the Ward I, Place 1 seat the incumbent, Councilman John Ackermann, was the lone candidate to file.
The race for the Ward III, Place 1 seat is also unopposed this year. The incumbent, Councilman Chad Aden, was the only candidate to file.
The council appointed Aden to fill an unexpired term in July after former Councilman Dales Janes vacated the seat.
City charter rules require a council member to reside within the ward he represents.
Janes moved from Ward III to Ward II earlier this year, which necessitated that he step down from his seat.
Janes may soon be back on the council; he filed to run for the Ward II, Place I seat. Janes will face two challengers for the seat.
Cheryl Chram and David McCormick also filed to compete for the seat. The Ward II, Place I incumbent, Councilman James Coleman, resigned last month.
Several residents circulated a petition calling for a recall election of Coleman and Councilman Robert Bischoff. The group called off efforts last week to continue collecting petition signatures. Bischoff’s seat will be up for re-election in November 2010.

Today’s birthday of the city’s namesake, Maj. Gen. Patrick Cleburne, will not be celebrated in any official capacity, according to city and chamber of commerce officials.

They lived here once with a strong presence and powerful voice, now diminished--the Caddo Indians. Layland Museum will present its annual cultural history event, “Caddo Indians,” at 2:30 p.m. March 28 in the new Cleburne Conference Center at 1501 W. Henderson. The event is free.
