Edwards accepting applications for U.S. service academies
Deadline is Nov. 15
U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco is accepting applications from students in District 17 for congressional nominations to one of the four United States service academies through Nov. 15.
The academies include West Point in New York, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
Applicants seeking nominations should have all application materials postmarked by Nov. 15 for the class entering in June, Edwards said.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens and residents of District 17.
They must be unmarried, have no children and be older than 17, but younger than 22, as of July 1. Applicants must take the SAT or ACT examinations.
`The SAT administered in October is the last date the test can be taken if the results are to be received before the selection of nominees.
For application materials or information, contact Service Academy Coordinator Stephanie Gibson at Edwards’ Waco office at 254-752-9600.
Candidates are selected through a rigorous process that includes screening by a service academy selection board, which evaluates and recommends applicants from District 17 schools and families. The process is based on scholastic and athletic records, involvement in community activities and leadership potential.
