Commissioners may contribute to care costs

Johnson County Commissioners will hold a special meeting Monday to consider approving $250,000 to the Texas Health and Human Services Commissions, to help bridge the costs of providing patient care and the state’s low rate of reimbursement.

The approval would be in accordance with the Indigent Care Affiliation Agreement between Johnson County and Huguley Memorial Medical Center.

In accordance to the agreement, a government entity, such as the county in this case, can put more money into the Medicaid program and the federal government will match the contributions.

That means that the county sends money to the state, the state puts it in the Medicaid account, the federal government sends matching funds and that money is sent to the hospital.

The Commissions will also consider applying for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant for the upcoming fiscal year.

State agencies, units of local government, crime control and prevention districts are eligible to apply for grants under this fund.

The grants support state and local law enforcement agencies addressing violent crime — including drug enforcement and criminal enterprise.

The grant is designed to support local initiatives and program started by local law enforcement agencies.

Grants may be used to provide personnel, equipment, training, technical assistance and information systems for more widespread apprehension, prosecution, adjudication, detention, and rehabilitation of offenders who violate such state and local laws.

The awarded amount is granted by the Bureau of Justice Assistance and award to individual states that then award variable amounts to qualifying counties.

Johnson County is eligible to receive $16,708.

The court will meet at 9 a.m. Monday in the Johnson County Courthouse.
