Children’s “Tails And Scales” program scheduled

Other summer events planned

The Layland Museum is sponsoring its annual summer educational experience, called “Tails and Scales,” in June at the museum this year.

Children in grades one through five may sign up to take part in four sessions from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday nights in June.

Live animals and hands-on activities will be offered.

Parents should register their children at the museum at 201 N. Caddo because space is limited.

Each program costs $3.50, which covers a craft, refreshments and a qualified speaker.

The schedule for the month is:

zx Thursday — “Turtles” by Amy Bluemel, of the Chickasaw Nation

zx June 11 — “Fish” by Mack Cook, Cooke Elementary

zx June 18 — “Horses” by Hana and Thomas Huff, 4-H’ers

zx June 25 — “Birds” by Jon Stanley, Harlequin Taxidermy

Amy Bluemel presents story and dance from her Native American heritage. She studied storytelling under the well-known teller Tim Tingle and worked as a teacher’s aide in the Godley School District.

Mack Cook has conducted many science and Gulf Coast Indian camps for the gifted in the Houston area. He learned much of his nature lore from growing up in the country.

Hana and Thomas Huff are a brother-sister team who are members of 4-H and show horses all over the nation. They live in Godley and went to Hill College this past year. They will bring two of their horses.

Jonathan Stanley grew up in Cleburne with a lifelong passion for birds. He creates masterpieces in his taxidermy business but will bring his live macaw for children to study.

Free programs for elementary children will be done in conjunction with Cleburne Public Library.

On July 28, children may enjoy square dancing from 10-11 a.m. at the library.

On Aug. 4, children may come to “We’ve Got Games” from 10-11 a.m. at Hulen Park. No reservations are needed.

Preschoolers may enjoy a free program at Layland Museum from 10:30-11:15 a.m. July 8. The title is “Wish I Was a Fish” with live fish, music, and interactive learning.
