Grandview school district Superintendent Keith Scharnhorst said Wednesday that he is the lone finalist for the same position in Clyde.
“I’ve certainly enjoyed my time with GISD, and all the things we’ve been able to accomplish over the years through working together,” Scharnhorst said. “And I’m also looking forward to this opportunity at CISD.”
Clyde High School, like Grandview High School, is a Class 2A school.
Scharnhorst will replace Gail Haterius, who resigned on June 30, according to The Associated Press.
Clyde school board trustees on Friday named Dobie Williams, the district’s chief financial officer, interim superintendent. Williams will remain in that role until Scharnhorst comes on board.
“I was able to visit with [Scharnhorst] a bit over the phone this morning,” Williams said. “We just learned of the board’s decision yesterday, so we’re looking forward to his arrival.”
Under state law, the board must wait 21 days to officially hire Scharnhorst.
Scharnhorst served in the Grandview school district for 11 years, first as principal of Grandview High School, then assistant superintendent and finally superintendent. Scharnhorst spent seven years in that capacity.
Scharnhorst graduated Blanco High School in 1977 before moving on to Texas State University. He earned a master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University in Denton and completed his superintendent training at Lamar University in Beaumont.
“He’s done a fantastic job for GISD during his time here,” said school board member Clint Ishmael. “We’re saddened by his leaving, but we also understand this is going to be an excellent opportunity for Keith and his family. Keith’s a quality person, and he’s going to do well wherever he goes.”
School board members are in the process of selecting an interim superintendent, Ishmael said.
“Then we’ll work on finding a replacement for Keith, which will be hard to do,” Ishmael said.
GISD Board President Jon Taggart said he intends to discuss the situation with board members during their Monday meeting to determine which way they want to go in hiring a new superintendent.
“We sure hate to lose Keith because he’s done a great job for us,” Taggart said. “But [Clyde ISD] is a little bit bigger of a district, and it’s going to be a good opportunity for him so we certainly wish him luck. We’re building a new [elementary school], and the district’s in pretty good shape. Now the tough part is we need to find a replacement for Keith.”
