Grandview school board selects super

In a unanimous vote, the Grandview ISD school board selected its new superintendent late Wednesday.

Director of Human Resources and former Grandview High School Principal Joe Perrin was named the lone finalist about 9:30 p.m., said GVISD Interim Superintendent Dana Marable.

Perrin will take the lead in the next month or so, she said.

Marable had been with the district since former Superintendent Keith Scharnhorst’s resignation was accepted Aug. 2.

Marable retired in 2006, but came to GVISD to assist with its needs. She had most recently been interim superintendent at Lancaster ISD for 18 months. Before that, she served as interim superintendent for Temple ISD for 10 months and was the Longview ISD superintendent for four years.

“I will be very sad to leave,” Marable said. “It has been such a joy and such a pleasure to serve with these people.”

Marable said she will likely remain with the district until the end of the month, if not longer, to help Perrin.

“The board has not told me how long I’ll be here,” she said. “We’ll probably just kind of ease into [the transition]. Because he won’t have to move and find a new place to live, the settling in should be very quick. It’s just going to be a really great move with the school district.”

When Scharnhorst left, board member Clint Ishmael told the Times-Review he wasn’t sure if the district was going to open the position to anyone outside GVISD.

GVISD opened the superintendent position about a week before Christmas to employees within the district. The district was required to leave the job posting up for 10 days, but Perrin said he immediately applied when the position became available.

On Wednesday, the district closed the job opening, and board members chose and interviewed him and one other candidate, Perrin said.

Though the interview process was quick, Perrin said he is ready to begin training for his new job. The new HR director will also require training.

Perrin, the father of two recent GVHS graduates, said he plans to continue down the path the district is on.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “And I’m very appreciative to the school board for giving me the opportunity. Our plan is to continue to excel. We’ve done well in athletics and extra-curricular activities.”

Perrin also wants to make sure the district maintains high scores on state-mandated tests.

On the last Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test, GVISD scored recognized overall, with the elementary and intermediate schools scoring exemplary.

“We [the board members and I] talked about that it’s already at a pretty high level and we want to maintain that level,” Perrin said. “We don’t want to become stagnant. We want to move forward.”

Perrin attended high school in Houston. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

This will be Perrin’s seventh year in the district.

  • Most school districts celebrate Christmas

Ask most of the school districts in Johnson County how they feel about “Merry Christmas” or Santa Claus, and the response is the same. Christmas is welcome in most schools, so long as students take care to not play favorites with individual gifts.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about one-third of all Americans are obese. More than 22 percent of Texans are obese. That may not come as a surprise, but in Johnson County, the latest numbers from 2008 suggested more than 29.3 percent of adults over the age of 20 tip the scales into the obese category, and the eating habits of Mom and Dad are being passed down to children.
