On April 3-4, junior Alex Ibarra shot a 90 on the first day of competition and a 95 on the second day which ended her quest for a spot at regionals.
Elizabeth Wren shot her season-best scores of 109 and 118.
Freshman Madison George shot a 118 and a 115 and freshman Quincy Yarbrough shot an opening round 127 and rebounded well with a score of 118 on the second day.
“All four of these young ladies are coming back next year and we look to improve our place in district next year,” Cleburne Head Golf Coach Pat McHargue said.
On April 10-11, the boys’ golf team opened the district meet with a score of 337. Senior Phillip Vasquez shot a two-under par score of 70 highlighted by back-to-back-to-back birdies on holes 7, 8 and 9, and a near ace on 14.
The four freshmen who made up the rest of the team stumbled on their opening rounds. Jordan Piety opened with an 86. Nick Graeve shot a score of 89. Trent Armstrong and Kylen Roberts began their tournaments with a pair of 92s.
The second day showed much improvement. Piety opened his second round with a 36 and finished with a 78. Nick closed his tournament with an 87.
Armstrong opened his final round with a 40 and had three straight pars before birdies on 13 and 14.
He finished the second day with a score of 80, 12 shots better than his first day’s total.
Roberts followed his 92 with a 91 that was highlighted by a 40-foot par saving putt on the sixth hole. The freshmen alone would have beaten the team’s previous day’s mark with a 336.
Vasquez hung tight with a second round score of 71 and punched his ticket to the regional meet in Abilene.
“It’s going to be tough to replace Phillip and his leadership, but it is encouraging to know that all four of my returning freshmen are as good as or better than Phillip was as a freshman and all possess his dedication and work ethic,” McHargue said.
