Match play city championship goes to playoff round

CLEBURNE — The match play city championship at Cleburne Golf Links ended over the weekend with Steve Riza edging Dewayne Burns in a playoff round.

“It was nice to win,” Riza said. “I’ve won the other city tournament before in 2006, and this was the first time we’ve had a match play tournament before, so it’s nice to win this one.”

On Saturday in the semifinals, Riza defeated Wes White, 5 and 4, and Burns defeated Perry Rosser, 3 and 2, to advance to the championship match on Sunday.

Riza had Burns down by two after the first seven holes, but then Burns battled back to get one up after 15 holes. Riza won 16 and 17 to go up by one again. Then Burns hit the shot of the tournament to send it into a playoff.

“It was close,” Riza said. “I never was down until 16, when he got one up on me and I got it back on 17. I was one up going into the last hole and hit a good drive on 18 and he hit one on top of the rocks and then he made an incredible birdie. That was probably the best shot of the tournament, and then I won in the first sudden death hole. But that shot he hit, he was sitting on rocks, he had to hit it around a tree, up a hill ... it was a really good shot by him.”

Riza made a par in the playoff hole to capture the match play city title.

Cleburne Golf Links Pro Johnny Pilcher said the tournament went as good as he expected.

“It went real good,” Pilcher said. “I think everybody enjoyed it really well.”

Riza, who has played golf in Cleburne since 1978, agreed that the tournament went well.

“I think [the tournament] was run well,” Riza said. “We had most of the players that play out there on a steady basis were in it. The format was really good, especially for people who work. It worked out really well.”
