Godley teacher attends ‘Making of Modern America’ institute

A Godley teacher recently joined outstanding teachers from across the state at “The Making of Modern America,” an institute sponsored by Humanities Texas, the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.

“The presentations and primary source workshops got me excited about history again. The presenters gave me exciting new stories that I can’t wait to share with my students,” said Nicole A. Chaplin, who teaches U.S. and world history at Godley High School.

“The Making of Modern America” drew 42 teachers to the LBJ Library and Museum for four days of dynamic lectures and inspiring small-group workshops.

The Austin institute faculty included Pulitzer Prize-winning historians David M. Kennedy and David Oshinsky, Pulitzer Prize finalist H. W. Brands, and distinguished scholars such as Albert S. Broussard, Monica Perales, Tiffany Gill and Gretchen Ritter.

Educational specialists from the National Archives and the LBJ Library provided teachers with facsimiles of historic documents and other primary sources that support the teaching of U.S. history and government.

The Austin program was one in a series of six summer institutes held throughout June at major Texas universities. Other participating institutions included The University of Texas at El Paso, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas Christian University, the University of Houston and Texas A&M International University.

“Humanities Texas was pleased to cosponsor ‘The Making of Modern America,’” said Executive Director Michael L. Gillette. “Giving talented teachers like Miss Chaplin the opportunity to interact with their peers and leading scholars will enable them to engage students with exciting new perspectives on our nation’s history.”

“The Making of Modern America” was made possible with support from the State of Texas as well as from the National Endowment for the Humanities We the People initiative.

Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, sponsors programs promoting heritage, culture, and education throughout the state.
