Grandview senior wide receiver Austin Martinez signed to play football with Southwest Assemblies of God University on Thursday at Grandview High School before an audience of family and friends.
Martinez caught 50 passes for 824 yards during his senior year and 11 touchdowns for the Zebras in their 8-2 season. Martinez was also a defensive stalwart for Godley before transferring to Grandview this year. Southwestern Head Coach Jesse Godding lauded Martinez’s physical abilities.
“He’s starting out with some great skills,” he said. “He’s been very successful at two different high schools and he’s got good technical skills like with his 40-yard dash time and his instincts.
“We’re going to bring him in as a defensive back and he can play offensively, as well. He’s got a good skill set for both.”
Austin joins his brother Landry, who transferred from East Texas Baptist University.
“It’ll be like high school again,” Austin said. “I have a chance to compete for a starting role and I’ll have a chance to get on the field with my brother.”
Martinez said he’s ready to perform at the collegiate level.
“I feel like I can do it,” he said. “I just have to keep my body in shape.”
Also playing for Southwestern is former Grandview quarterback Reid Golson. Godding said Martinez’s character is another great attribute.
“He’s a great character kid, which we are always in the market for,” he said.
