Four Elks sign with different colleges to play football on National Signing Day

On National Signing Day, Burleson sent four of its own off to play collegiate football.

Quarterback Barrett Cain, a first-team all-district selection on the District 7-4A football teams, signed with McMurry University, senior linemen brothers Derek and Dillon Baldeschwiler committed to play with Cisco Junior College and safety Kerry Fellers is headed to Texas A&M Commerce.

Cain accepted McMurry’s invitation even though it was the only school which didn’t offer an invitation to play quarterback. Southeastern Oklahoma University, Southwestern Oklahoma University, Southeastern Missouri State and Abilene Christian University were all interested in having Cain at quarterback next year.

“I’m going to McMurry to play receiver,” Cain said. “Burleson sent a player out there to play receiver named Courteland Gilbert. I’m going to play his position after he graduates this year.

“They told me after watching my film how they liked how I was comfortable running the ball. They run the air-raid offense and throw it a lot. They asked if I’d played receiver before and I told them I had my junior year.”

Fellers said A&M Commerce is going to utilize him on both sides of the ball.

“It feels like all the hard work I’ve done for my whole life is finally working out for something,” he said. “I talked a little bit to McMurry at the last second, but the players and coaches and the atmosphere with Commerce helped me make the decision.

“The offensive coordinator wants me as a slot receiver and the defensive coordinator wants me as a safety. It seems like a great place for me.”

Fellers was also an all-district defensive selection this year.

The Baldeschwiler brothers anchored a sizeable Burleson unit this year as the Elks made the playoffs.

Derek, an honorable mention selection on the all-state team and a first-team all-district lineman, said he will have his brother’s back. Dillon said the same.

“I learned a lot going from my JV season to my senior year,” Derek said. “I learned a lot more about pass protection and run blocking.”

“I learned a lot more about technique,” Dillon said. “I think we will continue growing and getting better. We always help each other out in any way we can.”

Burleson head coach Jason Tucker said it makes him proud to see his players getting to continue their dreams of playing football.

“They’ve all put in a tremendous amount of time and it’s obvious they love the sport,” Tucker said. “Not everyone gets to keep playing and hopefully they make the most of the opportunity. We have great expectations for them and we hope they come back and visit with us about it.”
