On Wednesday I had the honor of meeting the first baby born in 2010 in Cleburne.
The family and hospital staff were surprised that no babies had been delivered when the family arrived on Monday, three days after New Year’s.
A beautiful baby girl, the parents were proud as can be.
The mother told me about the race to have the first baby because another woman had arrived shortly after her.
In Chicago there really was a race to the first 2010 baby as three babies were delivered within one minute of the new year.
One woman gave birth at “exactly” midnight according to an article in the Chicago Sun Times, and another was born 10 seconds after midnight. The third was born 30 seconds after midnight.
All three were at different hospitals, though, so they can all claim the title for the hospital.
A Maine baby was born one minute after midnight, and a Nebraska baby was born just four minutes after.
A D.C. baby was apparently eager to be the first 2010 baby. He was born at 12:03 a.m., 19 days before his due date.
By now you’ve probably heard about the twins born in Florida just minutes apart. Although it was just minutes apart, they landed in different decades, making them the first and last babies born in 2009 and 2010. The boys were 10 weeks early and are in intensive care.
There were also babies who didn’t quite make it to New Year’s.
A police officer in Arkansas got a surprise on Thursday when he ended up delivering a baby while responding to a call.
The officer was sent to a house to help medical personnel when they found the woman lying on the floor in labor.
According to the Pine Bluff Commercial, he helped deliver the child, then wrapped it in a blanket and used a bulb syringe to clear the baby’s airway.
All these babies certainly made dramatic entrances into the world. I’m sure they’ll live their lives just the same.

Amber Washington: That he’s a firefighter not bad, it’s the T-shirts
People often ask me what it’s like being a firefighter’s wife. While I don’t have much experience in the area, (by the way, happy six months of wedded bliss, Drew.) I feel that because my husband has been a firefighter since before we started dating, I knew what I was getting myself into.

Monica Faram: Today is a day to celebrate miracle of life giving
Mother’s Day. Mother, by definition, means “a female parent,” but there is so much more to the word than that. This year is my first Mother’s Day as a mother, a day I have waited for my entire life.

When I do turns to I don’t
“Staying together for the kids,” is a phrase sometimes poked fun at, sometimes taken literally. A newer trend in divorce seems to prove that more and more people do, in fact, stay together until their children are out of the house or self-sufficient.
