Monica Green: My personal confession of a procrastination problem

As I write this, it’s 9 p.m. Thursday. I have already finished laying out the entire Living section and decided that it probably wasn’t a good idea to leave a big hole where my column should be.

I thought about just blowing up my mug shot, but I didn’t want to scare everyone when they sat down with their coffee and opened the newspaper Sunday morning. That might result in a lot of scalding.

My editors love to tease me about the increasing lateness of my column. I get so wrapped up in trying to get stuff done throughout the week that I forget to be prepared for my own stuff, i.e. this section.

So then I wrack my brain trying to think of what I want to write about. This week I thought about writing about the first time I was present when a major league baseball team lost, but I decided to save that for my blog.

I also thought about tackling the topic of how much time and money women waste trying to make their physical appearance more attractive. I decided to save myself from the number of phone calls and e-mails I would probably receive from that one. Maybe I’ll blog about that one too.

I guess I’ve always had a problem with procrastination. At least that’s what my parents have told me. I always have good intentions of doing something, but for some reason can never find the time to do it.

My problem is that I want to do such a good job on one project that I have a hard time thinking ahead to the next project until I’m finished with the first. At least that’s what I like to tell myself.

I like to think that I’ve been better about procrastinating since I started my job, but that’s really for my editors to decide.

As I write, I am beginning to think of all the things I need to do and have put off until I had more time. I need to pack for a weekend trip to Oklahoma, do laundry, clean house ... oh and finish this column.

I’m going to stop procrastinating ... once I get around to it.
