In addition to national and state elections next year, Johnson County residents will weigh in on numerous local elections next November. The filing period to compete in the March 2 primaries continues through Jan. 4.
Races affecting the county are the U.S. House of Representative District 17 seat held by U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D- Waco; the Texas Senate 22nd District seat held by state Sen. Kip Averitt, R-McGregor; and the Texas State Representative District 58 seat held by state Rep. Rob Orr, R-Burleson.
County offices up for election are county judge, district clerk, county clerk, county treasurer, county district attorney, county commissioners in precincts 2 and 4 both county court at law seats, all four county justice of the peace seats, and the 249th District Court seat.
Several candidates filed for various offices Thursday morning, said John Fidler, chairman of the Johnson County Republican Party. They were:
zx County Judge Roger Harmon filed for re-election.
zx Judge Robert Mayfield filed for re-election to his county court at law No. 1 seat.
zx Judge Jerry Webber filed for re-election to his county court at law No. 2 seat.
zx Commissioner Don Beeson filed for re-election in the county commissioner Precinct 4 race.
zx Commissioner John Matthews filed for re-election in the county commissioner Precinct 2 race.
zx Kenny Howell of Burleson filed to compete against Matthews.
zx Judge Ronny McBroom filed for re-election to the justice of the peace Precinct 1 seat.
zx Judge Jeff Monk filed for re-election to the justice of the peace Precinct 2 seat.
zx Judge Pat Jacobs filed for re-election to the justice of the peace Precinct 3 seat.
zx Johnny Bekkelund filed for the justice of the peace Precinct 4 race.
Early voting for the Democratic and Republican primaries for all races will be Feb. 16-26 for the March 2 primary election.

A three-way contest for the Ward II, Place I seat on the Keene City Council resulted in the election of Cheryl Schram Tuesday night. Schram garnered 119 votes. Former Councilman Dale Janes received 48 votes, and David McCormick received 54.

Tuesday’s Rio Vista local option election calling for the legal sale of liquor within city limits for off-premise consumption passed by a 47-vote margin, the largest yet of any such election held in the city.
