Leadership academy awaits AIS student
Zevecke to visit sites of leadership, museum
from staff reports
Alvarado Intermediate student Chris Zevecke has a busy summer ahead.
The 12-year-old was recently named one of a handful of students from around the Metroplex to attend this summer’s 2008 Lone Star Leadership Academy.
The academy lets participants connect learning with experience through visits to historically, politically, scientifically and environmentally significant sites such as the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District and the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas.
“I’m really excited,” Zevecke said. “I’m kind of going on a trip where they take a whole bunch of kids, put them in a group and take them to places where great leaders have been. That goes on for a week.”
The trip also includes visits to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, the National Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth, a wax museum and other places, Zevecke said.
Zevecke, who will be in seventh grade in August, is the son of Michael and Julie Zevecke of Alvarado.
Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy is based on a student’s demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator recommendation and involvement in school and community activities.
During the week-long residential Lone Star Leadership Academy programs, selected students join delegations of other distinguished students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about Texas.
Superintendent Dr. Chester Juroska said he’s pleased with Zevecke’s success, though he saw it coming.
“We’ve had several exceptional students that compete on the national level for one thing or another, so while I’m extremely pleased, I am not surprised,” he said. “We have an incredible bunch of teachers at the intermediate school that help our students get to this point.”
