Mahanay joins Burleson City Council

By Danielle Novy

BURLESON — Carter Len Mahanay emerged victorious Saturday night in the three-way race for Burleson City Council’s fourth seat.

Mahanay beat contenders Walter P. Norwood and Glenn Keith Wilson to fill the seat vacated by Councilwoman Claudia Humphreys when she decided not to seek re-election.

Mahanay, a certified public accountant, received 259 votes in the only contested Burleson race. He said he is excited about the election results, especially because a runoff is not needed.

“I am very excited to work with the city council and keep Burleson moving forward as it has in the last several years,” he said.

Mahanay’s recent success in helping a group of South Burleson residents secure a record offer for gas lease bonuses came at a good time, he said. Still, opponents Norwood and Wilson were solid candidates, Mahanay said.

“The other two guys were very qualified and would have done a great job,” he said.

Wilson, who received 44 votes, agreed with Mahanay, saying be believed his opponents to be “good guys at heart.”

He said he believed either Norwood or Mahanay would do a good job on the council, and the only aspect of the election that disappointed him was the scant voter turnout.

“What I’m disappointed in is the low turnout,” he said.

In a city the size of Burleson, more people should be active in their community, Wilson said.

Wilson’s campaign was centered on family and safety issues, and he said his Christian faith motivated him to seek election.

Norwood, a civil engineer with two-and-a-half years experience on the city’s planning and zoning commission, received 98 of the 401 votes cast. He declined to comment on the election’s results.
